Andrew’s novel, “Sam”

In 2002, Andrew began writing his first novel, “Sam”.

Below he tells the story of how the novel manifested.

Andrew writes: “I was in Esperance – a small town in south Western Australia – and I had a few hours before my flight home. I was just sitting around when this voice tapped me on the back of the head and said, “Sit down and write a story”. What kind of story? “Just sit down and write”. So I opened my computer and wrote the first line, “Sam came in from the country and the other kids knew he was different straight away …”

“I thought I was writing a SHORT story.

“Two years later, a wonderful, magical suspense-adventure novel had literally unraveled before me: The story of the disturbed and troubled Jackie Dane, the mysterious, enigmatic Sam and the girl who struggles to understand them both, dear Ginny.

“I can honestly say I take very little credit for writing this book – it came to me from somewhere else and even as I wrote, the magic, the threads, the meanings and movements of each turn in the plot were revealed to me one piece at a time, such that I often gasped or wept or laughed or held my mouth as if I were the reader (or the listener) rather than the one telling the story.

“I never wrote a plan of the plot and I was halfway into it before I knew how it was going to end – the realisation sent a shiver right through me.

“What is the story about?

“Actually, I don’t want to tell you. But what I will say is this: When you were young, did you ever feel you knew things – just knew them – and couldn’t explain why?

“Were you the kid who never fit in? Or the popular one who carried great pressure? Or the quiet achiever or the sporty kid or the weirdo, the loser, the bully, the sidekick, the nutbag, the clown, the earnest child or the fearful? … Whichever child you were, there’s a chance you’re in this story … Or, at the very least, you went to school with some of these kids …

“Read the story of Sam and enjoy the mystery. What does he know and why won’t he tell? Will Mr. Popponon bring Jackie Dane out of his shell? Will Sarah Donker work out what’s going and dob Micko and Ginny in? What is Vanessa’s mother hiding? Will Ginny’s Dad ever deal with his incredible loss? Who is “Boo” – and what does he want with Ginny?

“Spend a year with Mr. Popponon’s class, their parents, the staff of Arthur Street Primary School, the bullies from Year Seven and the band of Year Fives who try to bring them down – and reflect on what you know and how you came to know it.

“I give my thanks to the great Storyteller In The Sky for bringing me this story.

“And I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did.” AH
